Subversion and Redemption - Kelly Barnes
1. Some subversion examples that the author mentions are: GTFTS, Monty Python, The ABZ Book, Heather Has Two Mommies, Tom Sawyer, and others. Other books that could be subversive that the author does not mention is To Kill a Mockingbird and A Handmaid's Tale. These two books can be considered subversive because both of these stories carry a political agenda. To Kill a Mockingbird shows systematic racism and oppression in the segregated South, while A Handmaid's Tale shows the dangers of systematic sexism and a dystopian look at the future if inequality continues. Both push a political and societal message to their audience.
2. Personally, I enjoyed GTFTS. It was a funny way to approach the often frustrating task of putting a child to sleep. The target audience for this book is the parents of the children, however. Even though it appears like a children's book, it deals with adult language and material that only the parents of young children can properly understand.
