Jimmys Blog "Navigating Genres"

I like how she starts off with an example and then off that example introduces and explains her thesis of sharing an awareness of genres function in a tangible light, versus the usual theoretical approach. I enjoy her very personal writing style which she learned from reading other similar essays with similar audiences, college kids. She even explains her own troubles in writing her essay to connect with the audience us, even more.  It’s ironic because next she uses a quote from Lloyd Bitzer saying that people usually go off the person before them as a basis to stat off and once enough people continue this trend it turns into a new genre. So she is actually helping start a new genre of academic ligature specifically directed towards college kids and some characteristics would be a personal, funny, outgoing writing style that connects with the audience better, as she says being a coach rather than an authoritative figure. Overall I got a better understanding of how genres pertain to rules and how those rules change if the genre change, with more effort.

  1. I agree with your overall conclusion. What I got out of this article was how the rules can change between genres.

  2. I also really enjoyed her personal writing style. It was nice that the reader chose this approach of a "coaching" writer, making the text funny and not too academic (opposite of a textbook). I liked your analysis of the writer possibly starting a new genre of "writing for college kids" by writing this.
