Jimmy's Chapter 5 thing
To start off I believe this whole section should be ripped out and moved in a high school text book, or how to write an essay for dummies. Choosing a topic is very easy in the steps that you brainstorm broadly and then narrow it down through seeing if there are other papers on similar topics, how popular the topic it is, asking questions to yourself on if you'll be able to find enough information to back up your claim from scholarly sources, etc. This is essentially what this chapter talks about brainstorming, then exploring this topic through research and making this paper your own with your own analysis, committing to a single topic once you gathered all this information on a topic that you will enjoy writing about because it will make it a better paper, then finally turning your topic into a research question which you can answer with your essay. Overall I thought this was very simple and about knowledge most of us probably already knew. Because this isn't a hard topic I wish the author gave a different perspective than this simple one we were already taught.
I agree with you that the whole reading felt useless and entirely unnecessary. I think the information in the chapter was just a mild explanation of how we think about research topics rather than teaching us a way to come up with them.

ReplyDeleteI agree that the reading felt useless. I skipped over some of the stuff I felt was less important. I also believed the topic to be easy and not too much to handle
ReplyDeleteI enjoy how blunt you were in explaining why this section should be removed. It is hard to give someone steps on how to be creative, especially because giving steps can make the process less unique. I think that the chapter was added for people who totally have no clue what to do. I also think they added it because they basically to, seeing as the class is about writing papers.
ReplyDeleteI thought the article was helpful. I also find that we can gain more insight from things when the first thing we do is see why and how it could be useful rather than not .
