French Guiana: Prevalence and Predictive Factors." BMC

This research article shows a study on suicide risk among
incarcerated people living in French Guiana and factors that contribute to
suicide. By conducting this study, they hope to understand why suicide rates
among prisoners is so high and what the risk factors are. To complete this
study, the researchers included all new prisoners that arrived in the only
prison that is in French Guiana between September 2013 and December 2014. They
collected socio-demographic data on all the prisoners to identify the
possibilities of suicide risk. Some of these predictive factors that put a
prisoner at “high risk” are depression, panic disorder, general anxiety
disorder, history of abuse, and smoking. In conclusion, the prisoners in French
Guiana had a lower suicide risk as compared to the suicide risk of those in
mainland France. These results show that
the main risk of suicide was mental health disorders and psychiatric disorders,
“Although the mechanisms of suicide
are not completely
understood, some risk factors have been identified, such as
being a young male, belonging to an indigenous population, suffering from
mental disorders or alcohol and/or substance abuse, having a previous history
of suicide attempt and being in custody” (Ayhan 1). The results confirm that
the risk factors of suicide among prisoners depends on psychiatric disorders
and emphasized how important it is to identify and treat the mentally ill.
