Yang, Eunju. “Bilinguals’ Working Memory (WM) Advantage and Their Dual Language
Practices.” Brain Sciences, 18 July 2017

In this study, Eunju Yang “tests WM differences among three language groups with different second language (L2) proficiency levels to find out whether bilingualism grants any WM advantage and whether the advantage relates to bilinguals’ L2 proficiency”(1). Yang does this because of the theory that those who are bilingual require a higher working memory(WM) when processing between two languages. He wanted to study “a possible WM difference between three different language groups…and to explore bilinguals’ possible cognitive changes in relation to their everyday language practices(15). The study finds that those that are intermediate bilingual performed significantly better than the other groups in audio and visual tests. This shows that the WM memory capacity for intermediate bilinguals was much higher because of their bilingual experience.  The study also showed that those who are bilingual developed their own memory strategies to help them.
