Ayhan, Gülen, et all. "Suicide Risk Among Prisoners in French Guiana: Prevalence and Predictive Factors." BMC Psychiatry, 2017. 1-10.

The purpose of this research article is to "evaluate the prevalence of suicidal risk and its predictive factors in the correctional population of French Guiana." (2) For this research, the researchers used an analytical approach on the subject. They "included all consenting new adult prisoners incarcerated between 18/09/13 and 31/12/14 at the penitentiary centre of French Guiana." (2) They also gave the "Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI)" (2) to gauge results and answers on inmates' mental health and suicide related questions. According to the results of the study, "13.2% of the inmates had a suicidal risk." (4) Many factors led to this percentage including depression, being male, or smoking. Prevalence, when comparing French Guiana to mainland France, was higher in favor of mainland France. In the conclusion, researchers state that this was only the first study of French Guinean inmates, and further research should include "time dependent aspects such as first incarceration shock and subsequent adaptation."
