Chapter 1: Understanding Genres
Walking into this class i felt I had a strong understanding of what genres were and how they are defined. Something that I never had a strong grasp on was the fluidity of genres and how situational they can be.The example given in the book with Annie Burton shows how the time, place and situation she was in is reflected in the type of book she wrote. She wrote a memoir instead of a play cause she wanted to show a very direct interpretation of what was going on around here, giving real names and places to add the the real factor that the audience wanted. Speaking of audience this chapter touches on how a genre gives direction to a certain audience, something touched on here and there trough my schooling years. I think ENC 2135 will grow on finding your audience instead of most my other classes with the teacher being your sole audience in the end.
First, I want to say that I really enjoyed the dog meme. Besides that, I also thought that I knew what genre was when I registered for this class. We went through the same experience when learning how diversified a genre can be and how many different elements of writing fall under that category. I think ENC 2135 will both challenge our class and surprise us with the depth of composition.
