It's hard to believe that genre used to be so simple, in that it was only based for literature--novels, poems, essays, etc. However, today genre has grown alongside our many ways of communicating in different styles through technology. I believe that this will be a continuing matter and it is nice to know that genre isn't going somewhere anytime soon.
I thought it was also interesting to note that Kerry Dirk had touched on the fact that literary genre is a way to conform, almost like a template for us to use to get our desired affect. This goes back to genre's simple origins, when its classifications were how the specific piece was written.
An example I could relate to was when Dirk talked of writing a resume, or even a college essay. When we write these two different pieces we are conforming to its genre. We are using genre as a template to get our desired affect either being a job or an acceptance into a college. In return that resume, or college essay, helps the person reading it to take out the important information they need to make their decision. In a way I think genre helps us to also organize and get our point across. If there is one thing my previous english education has taught me, it is that you want to get your point across as plainly as possible.

  1. I'm also surprised by how diverse genres are in today's society. All the unique and growing genres that have happened even during my life time. I tend to understand more about changing TV genres but the list is still super long for something like that.
