Jordan -- Really Responding

  1. This reading really surprised me on how I should approach peer reviews. They are actually an effective tool for the writer as long as the reviewer is doing their job seriously and in an effective manner. Other than that, the reading did not surprise me. A lot of the advice given feels like common sense that just needed to be pointed out for readers to realize what they should be doing.
  2.  I do believe that the strategies in the reading can help in peer reviewing as it makes people think about some of the things they likely have just been glossing over. One thing that really stood out to me was the "How To Sound" section of the text. I believe this section is really important for people that do peer reviews because I believe, depending your tone, the writer will either take your comment seriously or blow them off. The harsher you sound, the more the writer will blow you off, however the more friendly your tone is, the writer may try to see from your perspective and actual enact the changes you may have suggested. The other thing that really stood out to me was the to not be short and sweet. This is really important as the shorter your comments or critiques are the more likely they will be ignored as the writer simply doesn't know what it is you're referring to.
  3. I have done peer review in the past. I have had times where it was great and it helped my paper and other times where it just was absolutely useless. So, I cannot say that my past experience has been positive or negative, but rather a bit of both, although more negative than positive. Most of the time it has been negative for me as the reviewer doesn't actually care about my paper so they either leave no comment until the end or a couple positive comments, which do nothing to help improve the paper.
