What interested me in this chapter is that it clarified genre in depth. More specifically it broke it into sections, and broke those sections into sections. Almost dissecting genre as we know it, and presenting it in a simple way. I had no idea that genre consisted of more than just a handful of categories, but that those categories had categories themselves.
Genre deals with rhetoric (my favorite) and the audience appeals (ethos, pathos, logos). I also like that genre is artistic in that you can mold it around your views, your message, or your argument.
However, there is also structure to genre, in that certain guidelines are used to make each category more affective in reaching its audience. Genre is kind of "best of both worlds" when it comes to the appeals of art and the safety of structure.

  1. Totally agree with what you said. It was fascinating to finally see how genre is broken up into a myriad of categories with further branches specifying them even more.

  2. I agree with what you said. I've always thought of genre as not being that big but the sections were broken down and broken down even more making me realize that genre is a big topic.

  3. I agree with everyone, I believed genre to be only one category of writing. It was very informational on how genre is broken down into different categories and how it contributes to clearer writing.
