Chapter 1

The number one thing I realized when reading this chapter is genre is not just about the style of writing but it is much more about the format and medium. Genre in writing is different than in other things like music and movies because while it does have specific sub genres for books, it does not end there. When asked to identify a genre of writing, most people would only think about books and how the story in the book can be sad, scary, funny, etc. but in reality the book is a genre of writing in itself and there are many more that aren't recognized. For identifying a genre, the book first asks us to think about target audience, and purpose of writing. Then with rhetoric and media we are given the platform to portray the genre we have deemed appropriate. Not all genres are created equal either. In order to write a short story, one would need nothing more than a pencil and paper, but when it comes to writing editorials and or news articles a lot more must go into it. Some genres require more information and must be treated more seriously. Overall, this chapter taught me more than I thought it would and I can now confidently talk about genres in writing whereas I only thought I could before.

  1. I agree with genre as the main source of new knowledge coming from this chapter. It was really in depth but personally I think when the books first asks us to think about the target audience and purpose that it also has a greater effect on all other aspects of writing the piece, for example the rhetoric and media that the use. Overall, it opened my eyes to the importance of writing to your audience .

  2. I really like what you got out of the chapter. I would have to agree with the statement "not all genres are created equal either". Each genre is different from one another.
