William Galvano "Shitty First Drafts"

The passage "Shitty First Drafts" was very enjoyable for me because it confirmed some personal beliefs I had about writing. I had never considered a first draft to be my best work and used it as a way to refine my final piece. Much like a sculptor taking a block of marble and chiseling it down into a masterpiece, a writer must spill all of his or her thoughts onto a page and then with a fine tooth pick out the good and leave the bad. The way in which Anne Lamont talked about how writing can feel like pulling teeth even for the most eloquent writers gave me hope that even though ideas may not flow heavily, it does not mean I can't be a good writer. The use of the word "Shitty" also takes from the seriousness of the passage, further explaining that writing does not need to be some perfectly thought out and fancy thing especially the first drafts.

  1. I think it is cool how the passage confirmed your own beliefs. I actually thought the opposite before reading "Shitty First Drafts". All throughout high school, I would always try my best to make my first draft as good as possible. Sometimes, my teachers didn't even give us the opportunity to turn in a first or second drafts.
