"Shitty First drafts"Blog

This article’s main point opposes everything that I have been previously taught in any educational writing class. I’ve always been told to have a single draft and then a final product, with the first and only draft practically being the final draft with some minor adjustments given by the instructor. In Lamott’s piece she says that in your first, “shitty draft”, you need to “let it all pour out” meaning you type as these ideas flow into your head. If you type it right as it enters your mind you will be able to get better, more interesting writing onto the page. Once the content is on the page then you can format it into your second draft, with some minor adjustments will turn into your final draft. Even though it’s a long process I believe it’s more thorough and will help my writing tremendously because I have trouble with formatting my ideas at the beginning so once I get my content in the first draft it’ll be an easier transition to formatting these ideas, eventually turning into the final draft.

  1. I agree that if you type it as soon as you think it, you'll likely have more interesting thoughts. I want to try this but I am worried that when I go back to read what I wrote, I will struggle finding ideas for the final draft because there is so much nonsense.

  2. I agree with you just write what comes to your head and you will get more interesting ideas on your paper.

  3. I also have trouble creating my ideas and find the first draft to be very helpful in organizing my ideas. Inn high school I was also taught to have a single first draft and then a finalized paper, which didn't help me much.

  4. I also was not taught this way in previous english classes. It seems to me as a logical way to get a writing piece going.

  5. I liked the first point you made about being taught the opposite of having multiple drafts in previous writing classes. Being taught that also, extremely affected my own writing and how I viewed revision of any my written work.

  6. I agree with the first part of your post. When i was first learning how to write, i was always taught to just have one draft and a final. I think the "shitty first drafts" way of writing drafts is the best way to write a good overall paper.
