Navigating Genres -- Bryce Ciaravino

I found this essay to be very interesting and informative. I thought Kerry Dirk made a ton of good points and it was easy to understand the different points she was making. Overall, i think the biggest takeaway that i got from this essay was that genre is not just a formula and you plug in certain words and then you've got your point across. The best writers in the world still do not have this way of writing mastered because it is all up for interpretation. A genre is not just a list of certain words or stories. Dirk made me think about what a genre really is and why is it so important. I struggled when coming up with an answer to this question because i think it is very abstract. When coming up with a genre you shouldn't look at it like a perfect recipe; if that were the case then every single action book would be the same. The most interesting thing about genres to me is how much variety there can be and how much it changes every single day.

  1. I like what you said about how a genre can't have a perfect set of guidelines when you're creating something.

  2. I like what you said at the end with the recipe analogy. Variety makes for unique content and genres allow for all kinds of variety.

  3. I agree with what you say about genre not being the perfect recipe. There has to be variety in the works.
