Chapter 1

Chapter one in the Bedford Book of Genres is about the understanding of the variety of genres. The composing of a genre can fall under a personal narrative, to persuade, and to inform. The rhetorical situation and the Genres conventions helps categorize the purpose for writing and using devices to help the audience to appeal to a certain article. I understood genre as only one category, but can be depicted into other types of categories. I was able to underastand genre in more depth by reading the two example articles. Two articles of different genres are used to compare the different purposes of writing about a wall arch that had collapsed in Arches National Park. Shaan Hurley created a blog using the rhetorical situation to create an informational and persuasive blog. He incorporates personal experiences using ethos, pathos, and logos. Pictures are incorporated throughout his blog page and applies to a certain audience of nature lovers. Paul Henderson’s web page is similar to Hurleys’s blog, but his web page is more informational on how the wall collapsed, instead of focusing on other information. From reading the chapter, I learned about the importance of how you compose a paper, article, memoir, etc. Language, visuals, tone, and audience are all big contributions to effective writing. I found Shaan Hurley’s article easier to apply to the rhetorical situation and the genres convetions. I believe his blog post applies and appeals to a wider audience.
