Olivia Barada "Navigating genres"

I found the authors writing technique and examples throughout her essay to help me understand the complexity of genre. I always assumed genre was a straight forward definition of a category, but after reading this article I learned we used genres in everyday life and its multiple purposes through out writing. I would've never thought that telling a joke, using social media cites and even wiring emails. Genre has evolved over the years and the George Washington example helped me see how important genre can be. Today presidents use George Washington's state of the union address for guidelines for their own addresses. Through this article I learned genre can be taken in many ways and has no guidelines or rules to follow. Also, genres help bring out a specific response from a a targeted audience, which I never knew.

  4. I also was never considered writing a text or composing a tweet to be a genre. It goes to show how we use genres to get messages across yet we may never even know where the genre originated or why we should use it. When you think about it this way, it is a very simple concept of knowing when to write in a certain way to do a certain thing through text.
