Navigating Genres - Stephen A.
At first, when I finished reading this, I honestly had no clue what I just read. It was a little hard to follow because of how quickly it bounced around from examples and subjects. But upon further reflection and a bit of rereading, I understand what this was about. Navigating genres means switching from genre to genre and being aware of all changes that come with that switch. Dirk gives a lot of examples of how genre is used to portray certain messages. From country music's depressing stereotypes, to the president's speeches to citizens, and even in terms of ransom notes and their effectiveness. Personally. the ransom note example was my favorite because it showed three possible types of a ransom note, but illustrated the clear, concise "right" choice of genre. While this was tough to follow, it made me more aware of genre conventions and how I should approach writing when switching my content between genres.
I had a similar experience with reading the article. There was a lot of information being thrown at us which made most of it somewhat confusing.
